Introduction to Finishing for Woodturners

About this event

Finishing a turned object offers some advantages over finishing normal flatwork finishing. This workshop is intended to provide the basic processes for the simplest finishing and to introduce several of the most common finishing processes and materials.
There are basically two types of finishes, those that form a film on the wood’s surface and those that penetrate the wood. Unfortunately, most woodworkers concentrate on their favorite finishes that work for them and don’t try anything else. This local workshop is intended to give them some experience with different finishes.

Finishing a woodworking project will always depend on:
Project’s wood
Project’s design
How that object will be used

Selecting a finish brings some other factors into play:
Is the finish toxic during its application or use?
What does it cost?
Is it hard to apply and repair?
How durable is the finish?
What is its marketability (what the end-user expects)?

The workshop will start with prepping the wood and move on to applying the finishes shown in bold below.

Film Based Finishes | Penetrating Finishes
Solvent | Solvent
Aqueous | Organic | Organic
Acrylic | Epoxy | Hard wax oils (Osmo)
